Inland Sea And Bay Fishing Map

The Port Phillip Bay fishing map probably rates as one of the best waterfront recreational areas in Australia. Anglers get to choose from a variety of piers and marinas along 164 miles of Victoria coast that locks in this huge water body. This includes St Kilda and other parts of Inner Melbourne, Werribee South, Altona, Mornington, Rosebud and Sorrento, among others.

It may have an impressive girth, but the water is shallower than it seems. Over half of it is less than 26 feet deep, but still easily navigable by boat. The maximum depth is around 79 feet.

Port Phillip is well known for the annual crimson tide. This is the snapper run and the most famous fish migration down under that brings thousands of snappers within reach of anglers all over the coast. Snappers can be caught at any time, but the biggest ones tend to stick to the deep channels and can be caught from October through to December.

A lot of people come here to follow the snappers on their migration route. It's pretty much the same every year, moving from Mornington and along the eastern seaboard to St Kilda and Altona on the Melbourne coast, and then to the Corio Bay outer harbor. The snappers head for shallow waters near the shore at night, and move back in deeper during the day.

Other fish that can be caught include flatheads, whiting, bream, squid and garfish. A veritable feast can be harvested by finding the right place to fish above a school of whiting. Australian salmon and King George whiting move around near the coast and in shallow reefs, and can be reeled in from land as well.

As the reefs change, so do the best places to fish on the port phillip bay fishing map. However, past history suggests a few sweet spots that are always a good bet. Those looking for a record shattering snapper may do well at the Ansetts reef in Mornington, and those who want to fill the boat during November may want to head for Williamstown.
