Smallmouth love to hang out in water that has structure like rocks, piers, or sunken logs. A good fisherman will use smallmouth bass lures in areas where they know the fish will be. If you are fishing in a new spot you can often get clues as to the type of bottom by checking the shoreline or even by looking in the water.

When the water is a temperature of fifty five degrees, the fish are most active. They spawn in the shallower water during the Spring. In the summer they can be found more in deep water.

Spinner baits work well. A rooster tail is a very popular choice. In dark, murky water choose a lighter colored lure. When the lake water is more clear, the darker spinners are the better choice. The fish have to be able to see the lure.

A feathered fly tipped with a meal worm or maggot works extremely well. Tie one on the end of a line with a bobber and pop it around structure. This method works well for bass along with other species like panfish, crappies and perch. You can use a variety of colors for different fish.

Live bait like worms, minnows and crayfish are also a good choice. Use a double setup and find out which bait works best by placing a crayfish or worm on a lower hook and a minnow on the upper hook. A helpful tip is to keep the bait moving.

A Mepps lure has long been a favorite of bass fisherman. They are sold in various sizes but the number one or number two sizes are best. Work the lure by casting into the structure areas or you can also troll with them. Teat out various depths by going slower or faster.
